Namecheap alternatives: what you pay after year one
Namecheap's first year is cheap and its domain privacy is free, but on November 1, 2026 its regular .com renewal moved to $19.98/yr, and .io renews at $75.98/yr. Registrars that price at or near cost now renew the same .com for $10.68 to $11.81. On August 13, 2026 a datacenter failure also took Namecheap's DNS, hosting, email and helpdesk offline together for hours. .com over 3 years = year-1 price + 2 × renewal price, one domain, no multi-year discount, no promo codes, before tax. Namecheap and Spaceship list a $0.20/yr ICANN fee on top of their .com and .dev prices (another $0.60 over three years); Cloudflare's at-cost price already includes it. Namecheap's $6.48 new-customer .com code is left out: it is one domain per household, first year only. Transfer-in prices include one added year of registration.

Moving out
How to transfer a domain out of Namecheap
The whole move usually takes about a week. Export your DNS records first so nothing breaks while the transfer is pending.
Check the 60-day windows. ICANN lets a registrar refuse a transfer within 60 days of the first registration or of a previous transfer, and blocks it for 60 days after you change the registrant name, organization or email (some registrars offer an opt-out). Don't edit your contact details right before moving.
Copy your DNS records. Export the zone or note every A, CNAME, MX and TXT record (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and recreate them at the new DNS provider before the switch. Cloudflare requires its own DNS to be active before it accepts the auth code.
Unlock the domain. In Namecheap's Domain List, open Manage and turn off the domain lock under the transfer-out settings.
Request the auth (EPP) code. Namecheap emails it to the registrant contact. ICANN requires the losing registrar to provide it within five calendar days.
Start the transfer at the new registrar and pay for one year. For gTLDs such as .com and .dev, that year is added to your current expiry date, so you don't lose the time already paid at Namecheap. At the prices above that means $10.18 to $11.81 for a .com.
Approve and wait. Confirm the transfer email; it completes in about 5 to 7 days. Then turn auto-renew on at the new registrar and turn it off at Namecheap.

How we checked
On November 2, 2026 we read the .com, .io and .dev prices from each registrar's own pricing or search page with USD selected (Porkbun's also from its public pricing API), one day after Namecheap's new .com prices took effect. Prices are one-year list prices in USD before tax; sale prices are marked, promo codes and multi-year discounts are left out, and the three-year column is plain arithmetic on the listed numbers. Transfer rules come from ICANN's registrant FAQ and Cloudflare's transfer documentation.

Is Namecheap actually cheaper than the alternatives?
Only in year one, and only on some TLDs. A .com at Namecheap costs $12.08 for the first year (sale price; new customers can get $6.48 with a promo code) and then renews at $19.98/yr. Cloudflare ($11.17), Porkbun ($11.81) and Dynadot ($11.62) charge the same every year, and Spaceship renews at $10.68. Over three years a .com costs $52.04 at Namecheap against $30.84 to $35.43 at the four alternatives (prices checked November 2, 2026).
Why did Namecheap's .com price go up in November 2026?
Namecheap changed its regular .com prices on November 1, 2026: registrations and transfers are now $15.98/yr and renewals $19.98/yr, before the $0.20 ICANN fee. The first-year sale price shown on November 2 was $12.08. Namecheap's notice does not give a reason. Cloudflare, which sells at cost, now lists a .com at $11.17/yr, which shows roughly what the registry and ICANN take.
Is Spaceship still flat-priced like before?
Not exactly. On November 2, 2026 Spaceship listed a .com at $9.48 for the first year (sale, regular $10.38) and $10.68/yr at renewal, so there is a small step-up of $1.20. It is still the lowest three-year total in our table ($30.84) and includes free domain privacy. Spaceship is owned by the same group as Namecheap.
Is Cloudflare Registrar really at-cost?
Cloudflare's documentation says its domains are "at-cost with no markup fees", and the .com price it showed on November 2, 2026 was $11.17 for both registration and renewal. The catch is that Cloudflare Registrar requires the domain to use Cloudflare for authoritative DNS, so you cannot keep your DNS elsewhere. Contact details are redacted from public WHOIS by default.
When is Namecheap still the right choice?
If you register for the first year with a promo and plan to move later, or you want domains, hosting, email and SSL certificates (from $5.99/yr) under one account with 24/7 chat support, Namecheap is a reasonable pick. Its domain privacy is free for life on eligible TLDs and DNSSEC is included with its DNS. The case against it is the renewal: $19.98/yr on .com, $75.98/yr on .io and $20.98/yr on .dev.
Why was Namecheap down in August 2026?
On August 13, 2026 Namecheap went largely offline for hours. The company reported a DDoS attack alongside a power failure at its Phoenix datacenter (the official status page cites failed cooling systems), and shared hosting, DNS, Private Email, EasyWP and the support helpdesk went down together. Outage trackers such as NetBlocks confirmed the platform was largely unreachable. If your DNS sits with the same provider as your hosting and email, one facility failure takes all three down.
